SCOA Submission: Review of Regional Migration Settings

Aug 8, 2024 | Policy & Research

The Settlement Council of Australia appreciates the opportunity to contribute to the Review of Regional Migration Settings.

This submission has highlighted the critical factors necessary for successful regional settlement of migrants and refugees, emphasising the importance of a holistic and well-resourced approach. Regional settlement offers significant potential for mutual benefit: it addresses population and labour shortages in regional areas while providing migrants and refugees with opportunities for a fulfilling life in Australia. However, this potential can only be realised with careful planning, adequate funding, and a commitment to building welcoming and supportive communities.

SCOA’s recommendations focus on enhancing infrastructure, ensuring access to essential services, creating employment opportunities, and providing comprehensive support through Settlement Service Providers. By addressing these areas, the government can facilitate the long-term settlement and retention of migrants and refugees in regional areas, contributing to the social and economic development of these communities.

We urge the Department of Home Affairs to consider the unique needs and challenges faced by humanitarian migrants and refugees. Tailoring regional migration policies to address these needs will not only support the newcomers but also strengthen the fabric of regional Australia. In conclusion, SCOA stands ready to collaborate with the government, local communities, and other stakeholders to create a thriving and inclusive environment for all migrants and refugees settling in regional Australia.

Through a concerted and collaborative effort, we can ensure that regional settlement is a viable, sustainable, and mutually beneficial option for the future.
