Banking is for Everyone

Do you or someone you know struggle with understanding banking information because it isn’t in your preferred language?

Do you rely on friends or family to help you with banking? Wouldn’t it be great if you could go to the bank and speak to someone in your preferred language?

Banking is for everyone is a joint initiative by the Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) and the Commonwealth Bank (CBA).

As part of the project, we developed a training program to support CBA staff to work with low English language proficiency customers and deliver culturally competent customer service. SCOA is currently implementing a multimedia communications campaign encouraging customers who need an interpreter to ask for one when banking at CommBank. The communications campaign is implemented in the following languages –

Arabic, Dari, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Dinka, Kinyarwanda, Hindi, Nepali and Karen.

The project aims to increase financial knowledge and access to banking services for low English language proficiency migrants and refugees. Communicating directly with banks, even if it is through an interpreter, allows customers to take control of their finances, encourages financial literacy and protects them against financial abuse.
