Policy and Project Officer – Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA)

The Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) is the peak body representing Australia’s migrant and refugee services. Together with our 129 member organisations, we lead the settlement sector and broader society towards our vision of an Australia where all people of migrant and refugee backgrounds belong, thrive and experience fulfilling lives. The Policy and Project Officer is responsible for undertaking and providing support for the implementation of projects and the development of policy advice.  

You will provide support in developing and writing policy submissions, briefs, reports, talking points and other outputs on matters related to settlement. 

You will undertake research on issues related to settlement as directed and liaise with stakeholder to arrange meetings, events, or other tasks as relevant. 

In addition, you will contribute to the design of projects and programs to ensure they are evidence-based while keeping abreast of key issues in settlement, multiculturalism, migration, and refugee protection.

  • You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, time management skills, reliability, the ability to balance multiple competing priorities at a time, and work in a fast-paced environment in meeting tight deadlines. 
  • You have the ability to identify and respond to stakeholder’s underlying needs, ensuring SCOA’s work meets the needs of key stakeholders, especially government.  
  • You will demonstrate experience in diversity and inclusion, multiculturalism, settlement or a related field.  
  • You possess excellent interpersonal skills, cultural awareness and a ‘can do’ attitude with attention to detail and the ability to follow through.

An internship at SCOA will give you the opportunity to see first-hand how a national peak organisation operates. You will be actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the organisation, with a focus on research and policy development.

SCOA aims to ensure interns receive a meaningful experience developing their skills for future employment.  Intern projects vary depending on SCOA’s current activities.  Each intern will be provided with a project brief tailored to their internship.  Interns may be asked to undertake ad hoc activities and attend various sector meetings and consultations.  These additional tasks will provide insight into the settlement sector.

At times you will be required to work independently, so a certain level of autonomy is expected for this internship.  The team is very supportive of each other, and are committed to creating a learning environment for those completing an internship with SCOA.

Who are we looking for?

  • Someone who is organised, who has demonstrated written and oral communication skills and a passion for community and social development.
  • Someone with a strong attention to detail.
  • Someone who shows initiative in their work and is able to work autonomously and/or as part of a small team.
  • Someone who is flexible and open to taking on varied tasks at short notice.

You do not necessarily have to have any experience in the settlement sector, but you will be interested in learning more about refugee and migrant settlement in Australia.
