The Settlement Council of Australia welcomes the Australian Government’s decision to formally recognise the State of Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly.
As the national peak body representing frontline settlement services across the country, we know that the protection and promotion of human rights is fundamental to building safe, cohesive and inclusive communities whether here in Australia or across the globe.
Australia’s recognition of Palestine is an important step in advancing the principles of international law, dignity, and equality for all peoples. It reaffirms our nation’s longstanding support for a two-state solution as the only viable pathway to lasting peace, security, and justice for both Palestinians and Israelis.
Our members work every day with people who have fled conflict and oppression. We see firsthand the devastating cost when rights are denied, when humanitarian obligations are ignored, and when peace remains out of reach. This decision sends a powerful signal that Australia stands with the global community in pursuing a future where Palestinian children can grow up free from fear, and where all communities in the region can live in safety and mutual respect.
In recognising Palestine, Australia is taking a principled step towards breaking the cycle of violence, supporting moderate voices, and restoring hope. Upholding human rights abroad strengthens our moral authority at home and reinforces the values that underpin Australia’s multicultural democracy.
We commend the Government for this historic decision and urge all leaders to continue working tirelessly towards a credible, just and durable peace.
