The Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) warmly congratulates The Hon.Dr. Anne Aly, Minister for Multicultural Affairs on Tuesday’s announcement of the new Office for Multicultural Affairs within the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
“We commend the Government for recognising the importance of establishing a dedicated Office for Multicultural Affairs. This is a welcome initiative towards shared responsibility in promoting social cohesion through meaningful collaboration with multicultural communities”, said Melissa Monterio, Chair of SCOA Board.
The Council believes that successful settlement goes beyond meeting basic needs. It is deeply connected to a sense of belonging, equitable access to opportunities and services, and active participation in civic life. Without these elements, new migrants and refugees may struggle to feel truly at home or integrated into the broader Australian community. Minister Aly’s unwavering commitment to justice, cohesion, and dignity for all Australians, especially newly arrived communities, has been critical in shaping this vision.
“This is a powerful step forward, recognising not only the importance of celebrating multiculturalism but valuing it as foundational to the fabric of modern Australia”, said Maria Dimopoulos AM, CEO of the Settlement Council of Australia.
The Council looks forward to actively contributing to the work of the new Office, bringing the voices, expertise, and lived experience of the settlement sector to ensure that multicultural policy is deeply connected to the realities on the ground.
