The Settlement Council of Australia stands in solidarity with Iranian diaspora communities in Australia who are experiencing deep distress and fear for the safety and wellbeing of their families and loved ones in Iran.
As a national peak body for settlement and humanitarian services, SCOA’s focus is on people and communities affected by violence, repression, and the denial of fundamental human rights, and on the impacts these realities have on safety, belonging, and wellbeing here in Australia.
We acknowledge the profound trauma carried by many Iranian Australians, including settlement workers and clients within our member organisations, who are living with grief, anxiety, and uncertainty while continuing to support others through settlement services.
As one Iranian-Australian settlement caseworker shared:
“Iran needs help now. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Iran and pray that the human rights violations that they are suffering will come to an immediate end.”
SCOA condemns violence against civilians and the silencing of women, young people, journalists, and human rights defenders, and affirms the universal right to safety, dignity, and freedom from persecution.
We remain committed to working alongside Iranian-led organisations and communities to ensure Australia’s settlement systems are culturally safe, trauma-informed, and responsive to the needs and leadership of those affected.
