In 2018/19, the Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) (MIC) held a Youth Public Transport Marathon Program that focussed on building the confidence and knowledge of newly arrived young people about public transport.
In the school holidays, 18 young people attended a ‘Public Transport Marathon’ visiting 8 services in their local area. The activity was designed to teach newly arrived young people about local services and how to navigate their way to services using the Victorian public transport system. The program was planned and conducted by MIC youth commissioners with staff supervision. MIC youth commissioners are a group of youth leaders from refugee or migrant backgrounds, who were trained by MIC to plan and conduct projects for other newly arrived young people. This program received positive feedback from the participants with 84% of participants stating they have increased their knowledge on how to use public transport.
