Chair’s Message

Welcome to our final newsletter for 2018. And what a year it has been!

On behalf of the SCoA board and team in our national office, I thank all of our readers for subscribing to our newsletter and hope you have found each bi-monthly edition to be useful in your work this year.

In this, our final newsletter, we have taken the opportunity to depart from our usual approach to focus instead on some of the tools necessary for running a non-profit organisation. Our team have curated a collection of useful resources on topics of good governance, risk management, human resource management and stakeholder engagement, among others. I hope you will find these to be useful snapshots of some of the issues facing non-government organisations, and the tools needed to manage them.

Before you explore these interesting topics, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the past months’ activities. You can read in greater detail about our work in the “What’s Happening at SCoA” section, but I wanted to briefly touch on a few:

  • In November it was announced that SCoA had secured its funding for a further period of 3.5 years as a peak representative body for the settlement sector. We thank the Government for its continued support, and our members for the trust you place in us to carry out this role.
  • At the same time, we know that many members are grappling with the realities of the recently announced Settlement Engagement Transition and Support grants. We know that the outcomes have resulted in some significant difficulties for members across the country and we have advocated on these matters both with the Department of Social Services and the Assistant Minister. Unfortunately it seems that there is little scope for improving the situation in the short term, however we will continue to work with members into 2019.
  • I was pleased to represent SCoA in Sydney at the end of October for the International Metropolis conference, where along with many colleagues from the settlement sector, I enjoyed a variety of practical, insightful and at times entertaining sessions. A highlight for me was SCoA’s Settlement Sector Conversation which brought together representatives of the Canadian and Australian settlement sectors to discuss how best we can learn from each other into the future. I look forward to enhancing our relationship with our Canadian colleagues in the future.
  • I thank all members who came to our AGM on 1 November, and those who have since considered our Annual Report. 2017-18 was a productive year for SCoA and I am proud of the work represented in our Annual Report.

I will pause here to wish all of our members, stakeholders and friends all the very best for the festive season and a productive and prosperous 2019. We look forward to bringing you even more informed content, research and strong sector representation in the year ahead.
