– in conversation with Maggie Toko AM

Maggie Toko AM is a nationally respected lived experience leader and advocate for people living with mental and emotional distress. Her work is grounded in a deep commitment to dignity, relational practice, and systemic reform.

Maggie has held significant leadership roles across the mental health sector, including as CEO of the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council (VMIAC), the peak body for mental health consumers in Victoria. She currently serves as Chair Commissioner at the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission in Victoria.

Across her work, Maggie has consistently centred the voices and agency of those with lived experience, working to normalise conversations around mental health and to reframe it as one aspect of a person’s life, not its defining feature.
