SCoA welcomes the release of the Law Council of Australia’s important final report: The Justice Project.
Since early 2017, the Law Council of Australia has been conducting a national, comprehensive review into the state of access to justice in Australia for people experiencing significant disadvantage. The Justice Project, overseen by an expert steering group led by the former Chief Justice of the High Court, the Hon. Robert French AC, is one of the most extensive reviews of its type in the past 40 years. It is also one of the most important pieces of work the Law Council has ever undertaken.
As part of the review, SCoA made a submission concerning the experiences of newly arrived migrants and refugees in their interactions with the justice system, and the impact this can have on settlement. In particular, we raised the importance of justice as one of the nine priority areas in the National Settlement Services Outcomes Standards.
We welcome this detailed and highly-relevant report and endorse the recommendations contained within it with respect to “Recent Arrivals to Australia”.
