On 1 November 2018, during the highly successful Metropolis Conference, SCoA hosted a special gathering of settlement sector representatives from Canada and Australia, followed by our Annual General Meeting.
For a brief overview of the two events, read below.
Settlement Sector Conversation
The special event, a “Settlement Sector Conversation”, heard insightful presentations from:
- SCoA Chairperson Dewani Bakkum
- Ms Queenie Choo, CEO of SUCCESS, Vancouver, Canada
- Mr Chris Friesen, Director – Settlement Services, Immigrant Services Society of BC, Canada
- Mr Fariborz Birjandian, CEO, Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, Canada
The presentations were followed by a vibrant discussion where the representatives from two world-leading resettlement nations shared their thoughts on the state of settlement services in each country, identifying similarities and differences and exploring opportunities for future advocacy and collaboration.
As a strong outcome of the discussion, it was agreed that NGO representatives from Canada and Australia should seek to work together on a more frequent and formal basis, by sharing insights and brainstorming policy issues in the hope that it will enable both countries to further learn from each other and enhance the settlement outcomes being achieved.
SCoA was extremely grateful to the presenters for giving up their time in what was a packed Metropolis Conference to share their thoughts and ideas. We look forward to connecting with our colleagues from Canada as soon as everyone has returned to work, and to start exploring opportunities for collaboration. It is hoped that by the time the next Metropolis takes place (in June 2019 in Ottawa, Canada), our two countries will be well-connected and will have made significant progress in international cooperation and sharing.
Settlement Council of Australia AGM
Immediately following the Settlement Sector Conversation, SCoA hosted its annual general meeting, attended by over 50 representatives of SCoA member organisations.
During the AGM, Ms Bakkum paid tribute to two outgoing Board Members, Denise Goldfinch and Joe De Luca who have spent many years giving their time and efforts in support of SCoA. We thank them both for their commitment.
Members also discussed the outcomes of the Settlement Sector Conversation and some of the insights and learnings from the Metropolis Conference.
SCoA thanks all members who attended, either in person or by proxy, and looks ahead to a busy and productive 2018-19!
