MIA Conference: 9-10 November 2017

In November 2017 SCoA CEO Nick Tebbey had the opportunity to present at the Annual Conference of the Migration Institute of Australia – Australia’s peak body for migration agents.

Nick’s presentation focused on the role of Australian citizenship in migrants’ settlement journeys and the need to ensure citizenship policies and procedures are inclusive and welcoming. Nick explored the importance of citizenship, both for migrants and also for the nation, and analysed the government’s recent attempt to drastically change citizenship procedures.

Speaking on a panel which explored other elements of citizenship applications and case law, Nick had the opportunity to share a unique perspective with participants. At the same time, it was useful to hear about recent legal developments impacting not only citizenship, but Australia’s migration program as a whole.

Successfully settling in to life in Australia is of critical importance to all migrants, irrespective of their visa class or background, and so it is important to maintain strong links with organisations such as the Migration Institute to ensure that issues of settlement are never far from the contemplation of those whose profession it is to help migrants take that all-important first step: obtaining a visa.
