On 4 December 2018,The Settlement Council of Australia attended the screening of The Merger, which had been hosted by the International Organization for Migration, The United Nations Information Center, The United Nations Association of Australia and the Centre for International & Public Law.
In 2016, the IOM and the UN Migration Agency launched The Global Migration Film Festival which showcases worldwide films and documentaries that capture the promise and challenges of migration for those who leave their homes in search of a better life, and the unique contributions migrants make to their new communities. This year the new Australian film ‘The Merger’ was showcased.
The evening started with a welcome remark by Par Liljert, International Organzation for Migration Chief of Mission Australia; Coordinator and Advisor for the Pacific, followed by introductions of The Merger Producer Anne Robinson, Actors Francis Kamara and John Howard.
The Australian comedy/drama film, explores the decline of a cash-strapped Aussie Rules rural footy club and the recruitment of refugees to keep the club viable.
The film was loved by the audience.
