On 12 February 2019, the Settlement Council of Australia attended the Roundtable on “Boosting Economic Security for All Women living in Australia” in Canberra. The event was hosted by the Economic Security for Women (eS4W) Alliance and supported by FECCA, NEDA, AWAVA and Harmony Alliance.
The event was launched with an introduction from Stephen Koukoulas, who presented eS4W’s White Paper, and defined the concept of economic security for all women. The day was focused around how Australian women from CALD backgrounds face a range of specific challenges which often impact negatively on their economic and financial security. These challenges were the discussed by the panel. The panel consisted of Stephen Koukoulas, Sandra Wright Women’s Chair of FECCA , Dr Merrindahl Andrew from Australian Women Against Violence Alliance (AWAVA), Lavanya Kala from Harmony Alliance and Margherita Coppolino, President of National Ethnic Disability Alliance (NEDA).
SCoA reiterated the importance of newly arrived communities having access to timely and relevant legal information and advice in their own language.
