beyondblue Connect is a free peer led mental health service in Greater Dandenong, designed to support people experiencing significant stress, anxiety, grief, sadness and related emotions (https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/beyondblue-connect ). Peer mentors work from a holistic perspective to support individuals to develop the skills, confidence and knowledge to improve their wellbeing and community connections.
beyondblue Connect team is a multilingual team that reflects the diversity of its community. Peer Mentors have experience of mental health issues, coupled with the lived experience of events that led to their migration, such as displacement, war, trauma, death, loss and grief. This vast experience enables the beyondblue Connect mentors to help migrants/refugees settle emotionally and mentally whilst they are waiting to settle materially.
Some of its work include:
- Listening to stories from Afghan and Middle Eastern participants about their struggles; together exploring practical ways to move forward peacefully and limit anxiety and stress.
- Linking participants into social networks, local clubs/sports and employment agencies.
- Offering individual and group wellbeing sessions focused on relaxation, easing stress, goal setting and navigating the local health and community services.
Based in Life without Barriers, beyondblue Connect began in June 2017 and is funded by the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network.
