Clients began receiving services under the HSP from Monday 30 October 2017. The HSP builds on the success of the Humanitarian Settlement Support (HSS) and Complex Case Support (CCS) programs and aims to ensure Australia’s support for humanitarian entrants remains a benchmark for other countries. The HSP is delivered by five service providers across 11 contract regions throughout Australia.
The HSP assists clients to build the skills and knowledge they need to become self-reliant and active members of our community through a needs-based case management approach. The program is outcomes-focussed with an emphasis on supporting clients to learn English and gain education and employment skills as important drivers of successful settlement.
Physical and mental health and wellbeing is a key client outcome under the HSP. Through their participation in HSP Orientation – a core component of the new program – clients learn how to navigate the Australian health system and are provided with a range of information to help them manage their health and wellbeing. Topics covered include the services different healthcare providers deliver, immunisation, and strategies for working through relationship issues that can arise during settlement. Service providers also support clients to access and attend health appointments until they can do so independently.
